While it does cause drowsiness, patients are still conscious and responsive enough to breathe independently. The level of sedation can be customized depending on the patient’s preference and needs. Who is Eligible for IV Sedation?

Typically, adults over the age of 18 and who are healthy enough for oral surgery are eligible for IV sedation. However, there are some additional factors that your dentist will consider before recommending this technique. Your dentist will also consider your current medications when making this decision. Suppose you’ve had certain heart conditions in the past or are currently taking certain blood-thinning medications. In that case, you must consult your doctor before your procedure to determine whether you are a candidate.

Additionally, those who suffer from sleep apnea should not have an IV during the process. IV sedation is not suitable for children due to the risk of adverse side effects. Consultation with your dentist will determine the best sedation method for your child’s needs.
